How to make a fake WhatsApp chat (or any mockup) in a minute

  1. Pick a type. Use the segmented control in the panel: WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, X or Notifs. Each one loads a realistic sample so you see a finished screen immediately.
  2. Edit the content. Change the contact name, status line, avatar and wallpaper. Add messages, flip them between sent and received, set the time and the tick state, and reorder with the arrows.
  3. Set the look. Toggle dark mode and the phone frame with Dynamic Island. Instagram and X mockups accept your own image or a clean gradient placeholder.
  4. Export. Download a PNG, copy it straight to the clipboard, or (Pro) export at 2x/3x, with a transparent background, or as a ZIP that contains one frame per message for animated reveals.

What people build with Social Mockup Lab

How to make a mockup look real

Realism comes from small details, not from the bubbles themselves. Keep timestamps consistent: replies arrive a minute or two apart, and a late-night chat should not show "9:41" everywhere. Use read receipts logically: in WhatsApp the last sent message is often only "delivered" (grey ticks) while earlier ones are "read" (blue). Write the way people actually type: short lines, lowercase, the occasional typo, an emoji, a message split in two. Match the status line to the moment ("typing…" for an unanswered question, "online" for a live exchange). Choose a wallpaper and theme that fit the person: dark mode with a plain wallpaper reads as a developer, the default doodle as everyone else. For Instagram and X, keep counts plausible for the account size and let the caption include a hashtag or two. Finally, export with the phone frame when the image will sit inside a design, and without it when it should pass as a native screenshot.

Who it is for

Marketers, social media managers, UX designers, video editors, teachers, writers and anyone who needs a believable chat or post graphic quickly. Everything runs in the browser, so it works on a locked-down work laptop as well as on a phone, and there is no account to create.

Fair use, trademarks and the obvious disclaimer

Social Mockup Lab is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to WhatsApp, Meta, Instagram, Apple, iMessage or X. Those names and interface designs belong to their owners and are reproduced here only to let you create recognisable mockups. Mockups are for creative, educational and parody use. Don't use them to deceive, defame, harass or impersonate real people or organisations; depending on where you live that can be a crime, and it is against our terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Social Mockup Lab free?

Yes. All five mockup types, the live editor, dark mode, the phone frame and 1x PNG export are free with no sign-up. Free exports include a small watermark badge. Pro is a one-time upgrade that removes the watermark and adds 2x/3x exports, transparent PNGs, message-by-message sequence ZIPs and unlimited saved mockups.

Does the result look like a real screenshot?

The mockups follow the real layouts closely: status bar, header, bubble shapes, read receipts, action icons and tab bars are drawn at the exact phone resolution (390×844 points, exported at 2x = 780×1688 px). They are mockups, not captures from the real apps, so tiny differences in icons and fonts are normal.

Are my photos or texts uploaded anywhere?

No. The editor, the preview and the PNG export all run inside your browser. Avatars and post images are resized locally and kept in your browser's storage so you find your work again on the next visit. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I export without the watermark?

Yes, with Social Mockup Lab Pro. It is a one-time purchase that removes the watermark, unlocks 2x and 3x resolution, transparent background PNGs, the sequence ZIP export and unlimited saved mockups. Pro is activated with a license key on the devices you own.

Is it legal to make a fake WhatsApp chat or Instagram post?

Creating a mockup for ads, storytelling, UX demos, memes, parody or screenwriting previews is fine. Using it to deceive, defame, harass or impersonate a real person or brand is not, and may be illegal where you live. Social Mockup Lab is not affiliated with Meta, Apple or X; their names and interfaces belong to them.

What size are the exported images?

Free exports are PNGs at 780×1688 px without the phone frame or 836×1744 px with the bezel, which matches a real 2x phone screenshot. Pro adds 2x (1560×3376) and 3x (2340×5064) exports for print and large displays, plus transparent-background PNGs for compositing in other tools.
